As I continue my Exploring St. Louis One Meal at a Time series, today I’m sharing my lunch experience at Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery in Kimmswick.

I’ve been hearing that everyone should try the Blue Owl Restaurant for years. A couple of months ago, I found myself about 10 minutes from Kimmswick after visiting my newly adopted foster dog in her Mehlville home.

I decided to take the opportunity to explore Kimmswick and get lunch at the Blue Owl Restaurant.

Kimmswick:

If you’ve never been to Kimmswick, be sure to allow a little time to explore this quaint historic shopping area.

In addition to the shops with antiques, home goods and hand crafted items, there are several other places to each or drink besides the Blue Owl. There are also a number of historic buildings that will take you back in time.

My visit to the Blue Owl was on a beautiful day, so I sat out on the patio. I never actually went inside so I don’t have any pictures of the interior for you.

The Blue Owl has a small town feel to it. Don’t expect hip decor…instead you get plastic patio tables and chairs.

Known for desserts, the Levee High Carmel Pecan Apple Pie is shown on the front of the menu. I didn’t order this, but it looks so good that it might just be worth a return visit.

It must be good…they offer delivery for this pie though much of the U.S.

I made it partway through while I waited for my food to come. They really should hire a good copywriter who can capture the essence of the history without going into quite as much detail.

The Food:

The Blue Owl menu includes breakfast, salads, soup, quiche and sandwiches. And of course, dessert.

They are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM – 5 PM, and Tuesday – Thursday from 10 AM – 3 PM.

Knowing I wanted to order dessert, I decided to go with the Terrific Trio special.

I started with the tossed strawberry salad. The candied almonds is what sold me on picking this salad, but the poppyseed dressing really made it a winner.

I love egg salad and almost never order it at restaurants, so I decided to give it a try. While I did enjoy it, I prefer my egg salad a little less runny. If I went back, I’d give something else a try instead of ordering this again.

The star of the meal was the banana cream pie. It was really hard to choose; they have so many tempting desserts. If I was there with friends, I think I would insist we all order a different pie so we could share.

Living in Kimmswick:

Very few people live in Kimmswick.

The historic city is only 1/4 mile in size. The 2010 census had just 157 people living in the city in 56 households.

Almost no homes become available in Kimmswick. In the last 5 years, only 6 homes have sold. They ranged from 5 years old to a home build in approximately 1877.

Kimmswick is surrounded by Imperial, located in Jefferson County south of the St. Louis area along Hwy 55.
